The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday modified his statement regarding his future in the Peoples Democratic Party, indicating that he will not leave the party for the All Progressives Congress, APC.He said he would not be jumping from the PDP “boat” into the APC’s “red sea,” even if he had to leave the PDP.He stated that at the moment, he stands firmly with the party that brought him to power.
The governor spoke at the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Rufus Adejugbe, while receiving an award of “Outstanding Achiever of Our Time” by the Ado Progressive Union.Mr. Fayose’s latest remarks on his political future, slightly modified his statement on Wednesday, when he said he was unclear which party he would be in when he would be preparing his successor in 2018.The governor had hinged his fears on the defeat of the PDP in the recent governorship election in Ondo State, stating that he would rather dump the party than suffer the same fate.“I will never dump PDP for APC,” he said. “I remain strong and unshaken for the
PDP. I can’t jump the boat , even if I want to jump, I won’t jump into the red sea.”He said he had no reason to leave the PDP, saying he would defeat the APC in the 2018 governorship election, irrespective of what happened in Ondo State.“I operate like the biblical Elisha because those with us are greater than theirs. The God of Israel that conquered Philistines shall be on our side,” he said.In a separate statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Mr. Fayose said, “What I said is that if the current man-made crisis rocking the PDP persists till 2018, rather than allow them mess us up like they did in Ondo, we may have to seek an alternative and credible platform.“We are not people who betray the confidence of our people. If there will be change at all, it will not be spur-of-the-moment. We shall carry our leaders and the people along.”The governor expressed optimism that the PDP would come out of its present
challenges stronger and better, saying, “Nigerians have a lot of respect for me and my voice. This I cannot trade for a piece of morsel like the biblical Esau.”“I want to say categorically that the shenanigans of Ondo governorship elections cannot be repeated in Ekiti; they delude themselves if they think they can. I want to assure them that I am not a General without an army,” Mr. Fayose boasted.“The fact that they rigged PDP out of Ondo state does not mean that they won the hearts of the people. Sooner than later, the joy they procured by dubious means will turn into ashes in their mouths. Their so-called victory is nothing but pyrrhic.”He assured the people of Ado Ekiti that more developmental projects would be initiated by his administration.“Chief Obafemi Awolowo died 29 years ago, but his works live on. I want people in 10, 20 or 50 years to think of one Ayo Fayose that governed Ekiti and opened up Ado Ekiti, built a new Oja Oba Market, the flyover, dualization of many towns among other landmark projects,” he said.“I have raised the bar of development in Ado Ekiti, I have raised the respect for Ewi and no governor can come to Ekiti and undermine this town and the throne.“ I shall do more to promote this palace to the extent that our opponents will have no space within this palace to construct any structure.”Mr. Fayose dedicated the award to his wife, Feyisetan Fayose, and the good people of Ekiti State, whom he said had shown unwavering support for his government.
