Kaduna, Feb. 17, 2017 (NAN) The Kaduna State House of Assembly has agreed to set up Gender Technical Unit to boost its responsiveness to gender and social issues in the state.
The agreement followed a meeting between six key committees of the assembly, Civil Society Organisations and officials of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
A communique issued after the meeting and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] in Kaduna on Friday, indicated that the unit would become functional within a year.
The communique signed by Haliru Dangana, Mary Sawok and Lydia Umar stressed that the unit would serve as resource centre and focal point for information on gender and social issues.
It added that the unit would collate and galvanise support to gender bills, bring legislators closer to gender and social inclusion issues and promote closer working relationship between the legislature and CSOs.
The communique said a nine-man committee was constituted to drive the process of establishing the unit, expected to be functional within six months and integrated into the Assembly within a year.
The steering committee consists of the Assembly’s standing committees on Women Affairs, Information and Judiciary, and the Ministry of Women Affairs, as well as three representatives of CSOs in the state.[NAN]
