The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Kebbi Chapter, says it will commence the disbursement of the N60 million `welfare fund’ to its members by January 2017.
Alhaji Sanusi Alkali, NUT Vice-Chairman, said that the disbursement would take place in Arewa Local Government Area.
He spoke on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi at a ceremony to mark the 2016 World Teachers’ Day.
He said that the money was realised through the teachers’ social security welfare scheme -End-well.
Alkali said the scheme was a saving strategy introduced to cultivate the habit of saving some part of their salaries while on active service.
He added that immediately the scheme was advertised, the Arewa Local Government Education Authority (LGEA)adopted the scheme.
The vice chairman called on teachers in the other 20 LGEAs to support NUT in its efforts to entrench the scheme.
He commended the state government for the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and appealed to the governor to approve payment of the 2016 leave allowance to teachers.
Alhaji Dahiru Alhassan, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), commended NUT for the introduction of the scheme.
He called on teachers in other LGEAs to key into the programme.
