Ernest Governor’s strike in the 87th minute at the Kwara Stadium Complex in Ilorin handed ABS Football Club a 1-0 victory over visiting Nasarawa United FC of Lafia on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the victory in the Match Day 18 fixture of the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) ended the hosts’ six-match dry run.
The visitors were the better side in the early parts of the game, but it did not take long for the ABS to grow in confidence ad take control of the game.
Adeshina Gata’s long pass for Eugene Ossy few seconds into the game was a wasted effort, but it did send warning signals.
Hassan Adamu almost scored for the visitors in the 15th minute, when he latched onto a pass at the edge of the box, but goalkeeper Suleiman Dogo dealt well with it.
Nasarawa United’s best real chance came in the 69th minute when Abdulrahman Bashir fired from 25 yards, but it was to no avail.
The situation changed when Ossy was upended on the edge of the Nasarawa United penalty box in the 86th minute when he was trying to turn Williams Jide inside out.
Samuel Oyedeji’s pass from the resultant free kick was enough to bring out from Governor a powerful shot which beat goalkeeper Aiyeleso.
The goal was the defender’s third of the season, after his double in Akure against Sunshine Stars on Match Day 8.
NAN reports that the result took ABS FC from the 13th position on the log to the 9th position.(NAN)
