Team Nigeria medallists at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics are to get mouth-watering cash awards in dollars, courtesy the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF).
The two bodies are to support Team Nigeria with 2,000 dollars for gold medallist, 1,500 dollars for silver medallist and 1,000 dollars for bronze winner.
Habu Gumel, the Executive Secretary of (NLTF) and Adolphus Ikpe, the Managing Director of (NLRC) announced this in Rio de Janeiro in a statement on Monday.
The statement, signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Tony Ubani, was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The statement said Gumel, also President of NOC, at the head of a delegation to the event, had promised total support for the country’s team.
“This is aimed at motivating the members of the team to go all-out for medals,’’ it said, though Team Nigeria has yet to register its presence on the medals table.
The statement noted that in spite of Nigeria’s current status at the Games, all hopes were not lost as some events such as wrestling, boxing, athletics and soccer might give Nigeria some medals.
It said the cash rewards would spur the athletes to greater performance and book a place for Nigeria on the medals table.
