National Stadium Gym repairs, will enhance training–Paralympians

As the ongoing renovation of the gymnasium at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos nears completion, Paralympians said it would enhance athletes training ahead of major competitions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the renovation which was near completion, bankrolled by FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC makers of Peak Milk, started two months ago to give the venue a facelift.

A correspondent of NAN who visited the complex on Wednesday reports that some athletes who were compelled to train outdoors due to the ongoing work, said the renovation was necessary.

Paul Kehinde, a gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, commended FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC for coming to the rescue of athletes.

Kehinde said that the completion of the venue would enhance athletes training ahead of major competitions.

“You can see that the gym is wearing a new look and this is what we athletes have been appealing for. We will always be grateful to Peak Milk.

“I think the only thing remaining is just the training equipment before the gym will be ready for use,’’ he said.

Also, Taiwo Olulope, also a Paralympian said that the completion of the gym would enable para- athletes train in a condusive atmosphere.

“When athletes train in a good atmosphere and get the right motivation, it will always yield a positive result.

“I hope other organisations will come in and support or emulate Peak Milk to promote para-sports in the country.

“The company also provides athletes Peak Milk every month,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the floor, light, toilets and doors have been fixed while the venue has also been painted.
Also, no fewer than eight fans were also installed while an iron gate has been fixed at the entrance of the gymnasium.

Attempt to talk to some of the workers on ground prove abortive as they said they were not authorized to talk to the media on when the venue will be ready for use.
Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria PLC provides monthly nutritional support to the Nigeria Paralympic team, a programme which started earlier this year.

The country won eight gold, two silvers and a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic games in Brazil. (NAN)
