The National Association of Hotels on Wednesday said that the current efforts of the Federal Government in reviving rail transportation will boost the nation’s tourism sector.
The National Secretary of the association, Mr Jijiwon Akpovwovwo, said this in Kaduna in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Akpovwovwo appealed to the federal government to link some important tourism sites in the country to railway stations to enhance tourists’ movements.
He noted that most of the tourism sites in developed countries use train to transport tourists to their destinations.
He opined that improvement in rail transportation would increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
‘‘Government should also map out a policy for transportation system; it will help in the development of the sector.’’
Akpovwovwo said the revival of rail transportation by the government would also create jobs for the youth.
‘‘Rail transport fare will be cheap and affordable to tourists,’’ he said, and advised the government to provide security for Nigerians and tourists.
The secretary urged the federal government to ensure that all states are connected to railway services to allow them benefit from the advantages of rail transportation.
“If the rail sector is properly developed it will make the country to be a haven for tourists.’’
The secretary said in countries like China, Japan, U.S., Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia, tourism has been contributing immensely to the development of their nations.
“So Nigeria can tap from such countries and develop the sector properly,’’ he said. (NAN)
